I usually like to make a summary of the previous year, both training summary and race summary before I make plans for the coming year, but not today. I didn’t do much in 2018 and I really do not know what my future brings in 2018.
Will 2018 be the year:
- The swimmer in me shines through?
- I find the joy of running again?
- I get back on a bike?
- I lose the unwanted 15 kg belly?
- I finally shave off my beard?
I am only setting three general goals for 2018.
- Workout 365 hours
- Swim 540km (45km/month)
- 120 Crossfit WoDs (10 WoDs/month)
If I manage to reach all three of these goals I will be happy with 2018 no matter what the doctors tell me in my follow up meeting or my results from Vansbro & Kalmar Swimrun.
But I have a strong feeling that my beard will out live my belly….
So it has been over 15 months since my last non-swimming race and I miss it. I really do miss the atmosphere and other competitors of triathlon and swimrun races and I can not wait to get back to the starting line. But for the time being I need to move on (or back) to being a good swimmer and then build from there.
For me the fall of 2016 and the start of 2017 felt like staring at a white canvas waiting for inspiration to paint something. I did nothing to force the inspiration. I woke up, I ate, I went to worked, and worked out when I could. But I had no drive.
Seven months ago this weekend, I had a stroke. My Swimrun partner and I had less than 500 m left of a 42 km course. Even to this day it stings to think about that DNF. At the time of the stroke I remember being disappointed that I could not finish the race. I remember thinking that my partner would be mad or disappointed as well, that I couldn’t hold up my end of the race. Thoughts racing through my mind as I come to a stop and have to sit down and have a race volunteer radio for an ambulance; did I eat too little, did I not drink enough. I was around 108 kg on race day, not something that I was truly aware of, even if I did see it, and everyone around me knew. I know that my weight made the day tougher, but I am not sure it was the cause of my stroke.
For the lack of a better word, my body weight is finally responding to my lifestyle changes and after 10 months of gaining weight, I have finally seen a drop.
I have a distance future goal of where I want to be, but for the time being I am just going to be happy with the new downward trend…
In May, I wrote about hitting rock bottom. Unfortunately, hitting rock bottom was not enough for me to motivate myself to start training again. Illness, work and lack of motivation from my part, kept me on the sofa and in a car.
What a race, and a fantastic course, but on July 16th my body wasn’t 100% and I fell to the ground with less than 500 m left to the finish line…. But let’s start from the beginning.
So Saturday was the first of three big races in July. Around 1600 Friday I pack my car and head to Karlskrona with my Swimrun partner Fredrik and Peter. Its a short ride to Karlskrona. We arrive just before 1800, check into our room, and then make our way over to registration. We get our racing bibs with lucky nr 11 and then reset our timing chip before heading over to Nivå for a tasty burger.
As most of you know my training over the last 20 months has been sporadic. Swimming being the only anchor keeping my training a float.
Jan and Feb I managed to find a better routine and found myself on a road back to hard training with 9-10 hours/week. But then work and illness got in the way so I only managed 1-5 hours training March and April. In May things slowly turned for the better and I was able to get over 6 hours/week for 6 weeks.
This past week I manged to push myself back into training and had
550 min biking
60 min running
210 min swimming
So last weekend the 11th of June was the start of Swimrun season 2016 for Team TYR Warriors. Unfortunately, my teammate Fredrik was having some issues with his calf muscle as late as Monday the 6th, so we decided it was better he continue with rehab and save himself for our other two races coming up in July. Luckily through Facebook and my swimming friends I was able to find a replacement for Stockholm Swimrun. Marius contacted me and a day later it was decided. I was very clear that I was going to be slow, so it was going to be more of a workout for him than a race, and he was ok with that.
As most of my friends are aware, I have been on a downward spiral when it comes to my training and my body weight. This past weekend at the Swedish Nationals for Masters Swimming short course, I think I can say that I finally hit rock bottom… My times during the three day competition were around the same level I had back in 2006 when I just started back up in Masters.
