It’s actually been a long time since I was in such good shape that I needed to taper, or even was interested in tapering my workouts prior to a race. Last summer I swam though the summer with no real taper before my long swim. The last 4-5 Swedish Nationals have also fallen in a time frame, where I was travelling a lot with work prior to and after, so my focus has not been 100% on pool swimming.
Swedish Nationals is nine days, and last night was the start of my taper in the pool and today I started to reduce my outside the pool training. I haven’t had a real taper since 2013, so it will be interesting to see how my body and my mind will react.

1,000,000m update thru Feb
Since it is easier for me to report updates based on Monday to Sunday, February’s update includes the 1st of March. For the first time since I started this challenge I skipped my fifth swim of the week. I had already reached my feb goal and I knew I would reach my week goal after this mornings swim. So I saved that workout for another day.

Week 7 – “halfway” thru Feb
It’s a leap year, which means and extra training this month, and we’re just over halfway thru February. It’s been three weeks with with two hour Sunday swimming and I’m starting to feel the effects of my long training weeks. My shoulders are sore and swimming doesn’t feel as good on Sunday’s as it does during the week.

Swimming, swimming and more swimming
Swimming, swimming and more swimming. If you have been reading my bloggs lately you might have gotten the impression that all I do is swim. But in fact swimming is only half of what I try to do these days.
1 Million Meter – January update
As you know I took on the 1,000,000 m Challenge 2020, or 1000 km, or in Swedish a 100 mil.
It was a rough start to the year with a slow start to the swim year with less than 10km the first week, but with Thursday night’s medley workout and Friday the 31st solo swim I finally swam past the pace holder.
Two weeks into 2020
Yesterday my 1,000 km challenge group asked for us to update on our progress. Wow! Amazing how far people have managed to swim after only 15 days. I am not really on track if you compare me to the weekly or monthly averages, but I know I will get my extra kilometers in once I start swimming outdoors.

1,000,000m Swimming 2020
I was happy with my 2020 goal to swim 800km in 2020. Its an average of about 2.2km/day, or 15.4km/week. It would have also been an increase from around 725km from 2011 and 2012. But yesterday I got trick into reading about others that were shooting for 1,000,000m in 2020.

It sounded like a lot, but then I looked at it again and it would only mean an extra 500m/day or 3500m/week. I had been considering adding a fifth swim workout to my week, and this challenge will give me that extra motivation I needed to make it happen.
I know that a majority of my swimming will happen May-Aug, so from now until April I just need to do what I can to not miss a practice. When I do miss a swim practice, I will have to consider switching a crossfit or spinning pass with going to the pool instead. Once the lake is suitable for swimming I will have to start swimming 6 days a week until mid-summers eve. From mid-summer until after my Viking race I will have to swim at least once a day to get my shoulders ready for that long swim. Good thing that I have lots of swimming friends around me that will make going to the pool/lake easier.
My wife also supports this goal, since she wants me to get back into shape.
2019 Summary & 2020 Goals
2019 was supposed to be a swim year for me. I was hoping to average ~42km swimming, ~31 hrs training and 10 CrossFit workouts a month.
But right from the get go work would put a stop to my training. Several trips to Poland starting January 13th, two to Dubai, then China, Malaysia and Lithuania really made it hard to swim or workout at all.

100x100mx100s
It’s been a long time since I’ve challenged myself with a hard 100x100m. I think it was 6-7 years ago when I did this series start 1:30.
Now I do it to be social and swim on 100 seconds or 1:40. Today we were eight swimmers that managed 100. A few that swam on 1:30, three of us 1:40 and two others on 1:45. And a lot of swimmers that swam 1:50-2:15 and managed to swim in a range of 50-89×100.
1-10 just swimming
11-100 with paddles
Felt really good. 12-50 I went first in my lane and held 1:20-1:22 and was really relaxed. My buoy broke around 78 and was lucky to have a back up.

My job will most likely keep me from getting back to swimming on a 1:30 start, but I’m hoping to be able to swim 10km under 3 hours for many years to come.
Winter swim for Charity
I have always been fascinated by charity drives and other athletic collections that are able to raise lots of money. For example Ride of Hope and Swim of Hope. I was a part of a 24 hour swim a few years ago to help raise money for Doctors with out borders, but I am not sure how much I really effected the amount we raised.
